6758 Bandmaster John Stephen Gandee, 1st North Staffordshire Regt

1867 Dec 27. Born Paddington, London on 1901 census, but a web tree says Thayet Myo (which is in Burma). IGI says born 27 Dec 1866, christened 5 Feb 1867 in India to William and Margaret Gandee who had himself been born in Thayet Myo, West Bengal and was also a soldier. His father William married in Ireland in August 1863 and was discharged in Belfast in 1883

1898 India medal list. Peshawar 1898 reg no 347 Band Sgt 2nd battalion PWO Yorkshire regt. He is noted as in Punjab Command. . The family still have a medal - India 1895 2 bars Tirah 1897-98 and Punjab Frontier 1897-98.

1909 Dec 8 Born a son in Kent , John Stephen Gandee

1911 census His wife and son are at Shorncliffe Camp, Kent. He is listed among the soldiers at Shorncliffe barracks as a Bandmaster in 1st battalion N. Staff Reg.

1913 An Almanac shows him as Bandmaster of North Staffs Regt in Buttevant, Cork

1913 Betty Eileen, his daughter, was born in Mallow

Buried in Curragh. "To the memory of John Stephen Gandee (Late Bandmaster) 1st Bn The Prince of Wales's North Staffordshire Regt who died 5th Day of Jany 1920 aged 63 years. Erected by the Officers, WOs, NCOs and Men of the Regt."
