Lance-Corporal Weldon was shot when ambushed in the street in Castlerea, County Roscommon. The shooting happened within a few minutes of Curfew. No further details were available as no witnesses were about. A woman, Mrs McDonagh was killed by a stray bullet and a man Peter Noone was seriously injured. It appears from "They put the flag a flyin" that it was a random tit for tat murder. 10 IRA men entered the town, intent on shooting any British troops they saw (Tom Crawley Witness Statement, p10). L/Cpl Weldon was the only soldier they found. The civilian casualties appear to have happened when the IRA were withdrawing froom the town, and got involved in an exchange of shots with troops.
