Driver Hopkins received multiple wounds to the body, causing shock and eventual death on 30 March 1920. The Cork Examiner of 31 March reported that the body of ‘Gunner’ Walter Hopkins had been found on the railway tracks at Pike Boreen Bridge, Fermoy, with his body cut in two and with his right leg severed below the knee. He had been serving as a driver for the 87th Battalion of the Royal Field Artillery in Fermoy. He was interred in St Mary’s Churchyard at Almondsbury near Bristol.
