1921 May 16. Died age 33. Son of Arthur and Maria Herrod; husband of Jennie Herrod, of 53, Hillary St., Woodhouse Lane, Leeds. Native of Pulham St. Mary, Norfolk.
- May 16. He went missing. He walked out of the Navan Workhouse Barracks at 8 pm in civilian clothes and went in the direction of Ardbracken. He did not return.
- May 26. His body was found in the Blackwater, at Knockumber near Navan. His hands were tied behind his back, a handkerchief was tied over his eyes and the body weighted with a 17lb stone.
- The body was found by a man out fishing
- He inquiry found he died of strangulation.
- IRA sources say he was killed for gathering information for the security forces. The soldier was dating a girl who worked as a house maid for pro-British Councillor John Law of Ardbracken. It is believed the soldier came across sheds that were being used by Volunteers "On the Run" ; and had been warned to stay away from the area but he failed to heed the warning.
