Defected
A number of British Army soldiers defected and joined the I.R.A. these included;
- Charles Chidley an English Soldier stationed in Offaly.Fought with the Irregulars, and ended up back in UK with a pension for wounds
- Tommy Clarke deserted with Monaghan
- John Coote deserted in 1918. Joined Free State Army
- George Mines deserted at the same time as Charles Chidley
- Peter Monaghan a Scottish private with the Royal Engineers who deserted from his barracks in Cobh, and joined the I.R.A.’s 3rd West Cork Brigade and was killed fighting against the British Army at Crossbarry on 19 March 1921.
- Reginald Walter Stenning a Londoner who deserted from of the East Lancashire Regiment in Kerry and joined the I.R.A..He was captured and shot by Government Forces in 1923
